Our ink control system (I-ICS) controls the concentration of color in the entire print run with a revolutionary system that goes beyond a simple viscometer. The result is a totally equal print run and when memorizing the working conditions it eliminates color adjustment times that reproduce the same tone printed in the following repetitions. It is achieved with a drop body viscosity measuring system that provides high precision measurements (which can not be obtained with other methods such as ultrasonic viscometers), together with a temperature sensor to calculate the concentration of solids (resin / pigment) in the ink. This is the only parameter capable of guaranteeing stability in the printed color.

This process, which carries out an I-ICS, adapts to any flexographic or rotogravure printer on the market, and is presented with multiple installation options in terms of cabinets, supports or adaptations to different machines.

It is handled with a very intuitive software in a touch monitor with which you can manage the current working conditions such as color labels, desired concentration, evolution graphs and a history of jobs to be reused whenever you want.

Measurement unit - Viscometer


Considering the variables of viscosity and temperature, our Ink Control Solution keeps the ratio between the pigment + resin and the solvent / water constant. This value is what we call Ink Concentration.

The viscosity is constantly measured by measuring the time of fall of a body inside a tube through which the ink flows. In addition, the unit of measurement incorporates a probe to know the temperature at all times.

The viscosity and temperature data are sent to the computer where they are interpreted to calculate the concentration of inks in%.

This system measures up to 120% more accuracy than an ultrasonic viscometer.

The Temperature Control module


ts mission is to maintain a stable temperature in the ink, minimizing the evaporation of the solvent by cooling the ink, within the appropriate limits with an accuracy margin of +/- 1º C.
Optionally, the ink heating system can be incorporated.

With a stable ink temperature we get better results, besides an important saving of solvent to avoid evaporation and achieve a stable concentration.

The advantages of maintaining a stable temperature are:

  1. Better ink transfer and therefore higher print quality.
  2. Uniformity of tones during production processes and in future repetitions.
  3. Decrease in solvent consumption and elimination of retardants.
  4. Improvements in production processes, by increasing the printing speed.
  5. Energy saving derived from the lower electrical consumption used in drying.
  6. Environmental sustainability due to the reduction of solvent emissions.

I- ICS/CT includes:

  1. Exchangers (one for each pressure group).
  2. Electronics and Control Software integrated with I-ICS or I-ACS (Auto-Wash System).
  3. Valves for the control of the water coolant.

I- ICS/CT Does not include:

  1. The cold water lines, which connect the chiller with the exchangers in the measurement unit, which will be the customer’s responsibility.
  2. Chiller and pipes from chiller to the equipment.

Solvent Mixer

Allows different formulas of up to 4 dilution solvents for each printing station. It is a module assembled in the I-ICS system, which prepares the solvent mixture used to control the concentration of the ink. It is possible to mix additional diluents in each printing group depending on the type of work to be carried out. Includes additional solvent valves.

Solvent Control

Quantifies the solvent consumed in each printing station by discriminating whether it is used for washing or viscosity control and provides reports of the amount of solvent used in a certain period of time or in a specific job.

pH control improves drying control and keeps water based ink stable

It is a module, assembled to the I-ICS system, which far exceeds the market standards in its area of activity. It is intended for water-based inks, automatically measures and corrects the pH levels of the ink used with an accuracy of +/- 0.2 keeping all the qualities of the ink stable.
This module is composed of sensors, one for each unit of measurement, controlled by a Software and with pH correction addition valve.

Magnetic ink filters


Magnetic ink filters of different mesh with magnet to eliminate metallic particles and that act as an expansion vessel in pneumatic pump circuits.

During printing, all kinds of solid waste fall into the ink. By preventing these particles from passing to the support, we avoid printing errors as well as preventing them from scratching, clogging or depositing on the anilox, chambers and tubes.

Agitators to remove foam and mix the solvent or water with the ink


It is a module assembled in the I-ICS system, which manages to improve the mixture between the ink and the solvent, reducing the foam generated in the ink container, minimizing the amount of printing effects. It is installed on a stainless steel support and is operated with automatic start and stop, from the desk of the system.

Also available as an independent pumping and stirring system with filter.

All I-ICS modules: Ink control, temperature control, stirrers, solvent consumption measurement, pH control, independent solvent mixing and magnetic ink filters, are designed to be added to the printing equipment under the same chassis and in the same control panel.

Both water inks and solvent inks can use:

Independent and autonomous systems

Viscosity control system for inks closed and independent consisting of two parts:

  • The measurement unit, governed by a controller and a dialogue terminal where the process information is displayed.
  • The measurement set, located at the bottom and with easy access by means of a practicable gate, includes all the necessary elements to put in between the ink circuit in order to measure and regulate the viscosity (as well as other parameters in the case of assembly additional modules).

The equipment is located manually between the ink tank and the point of application (optionally you can mount some wheels to facilitate its movement if this is going to be a usual procedure) and aspirates from the ink tank itself.

Traditionally, viscosity has been the variable used by printers to maintain color in flexographic and gravure printing. Fruit of our obsession to improve and innovate in each process, in Inelme we questioned whether viscosity was the only factor that influenced color. And we found the key: Temperature. It was then when we developed I-ICS, that adds to the viscosity the control of the temperature of the ink, calculating the concentration of solids and thus guaranteeing a homogeneous color throughout the entire run.
